bottom for plants

i was thinking of seting a tank with live plants what kinda of bottom would i need ie just gravel or some kinda dirt the gravel on top ?? and how thick does it have to be

I just went with the eco-complete (black substrate designed for plants) it comes in a water packed bag. I've got the depth at about 3 inches. NO cloudiness, no rinsing, it was a breeze.
