"boosting" Filters

Just wandered if its safe to put a powerhead on the intake of a filter? Are their any benefits?

Not quite the same, but I have read about adding powerheads to direct "rubbish" towards the filter intake. This gives a slightly underpowered filter a chance of keeping the tank clean, for instance it was suggested to me that I might be able to run my 5-footer with just the FX5 filter and a strong powerhead of say 5000lph, creating a current for my riverine fish and helping the filter's debris removal properties.

yeah i've heard of that,i reckon if it was directly on the intake it would improve the filters intake

Surely ramming water down the intake faster than the filter is able to get rid of it is just going to add pressure on your watertight seals and eventually lead to you tank draining away into your living room ? Also isn't area of media just as inmportant as water flow so wouldn't spending that money on another (even small) filter be far better than buying a powerhead ?
