just bin and bought a large piece of bogwood from lfs. was told to soak it for a few days to get some tannings and loose bits out but when i put it in water it floated...... how the hell am i to get it to stay at the bottom of my tank? do i need to weigh it down?

Mine sunk when I put it in a year ago. Lol that is funny, how can bogwood float. I would just weigh it down, or take it back and ask them what the hell the problem was.

so did mine.... the wood will saturate with water and eventualy sink

however some fish stores take back wood if it floats

i soaked mine for about 2 weeks by the end it was at the bottom of the bucket

You can boil it, which would speed up the soaking process.

Mine was dried and floated. I soaked for a month and weighed it down and now 8 weeks later it happily stays down it self.

You could soak 1 part of it to get some tannins out and saturate one side...Or you could boil it in the bath using a million kettles full of water? or you could add it to your tank now and make do with brown water for a month or two..may neeed to weigh it down for that long too

With mine I put it in a large plastic container, and poured a boiling kettle full of water over it about 10 times until it was completely submerged, and left it overnight. I repeated this about 3 times, and now, no tannins!

Ah....un-trainable bogwood syndrome!!!! Been there, done that :D I left mine in the bath for a few days [was lucky enough to have a shower room then! If not, weigh it down with a large rock of piece of slate in your tank....it will give in....eventually!!!!!!!!

I've got two smaller pieces of bogwood which both sank to start with. I put them in a basin and pour round about 4 kettles worth of boiling water on them. It's leaching the tannins pretty well!

You could try putting your piece in a bucket, if you have one big enough. Then pour boiling water from a kettle over it until it's deep enough to cover the bogwood when it's weighed down.

i hope it sinks as its a wicked piece of wood :good:
