I bought a bit bogwood from my LFS the other day and he suggested a method i hadn't heard before.

He said to put the wood through the dishwasher (without the soap obviously).

So i did, and it worked a treat. It's a really handy method for large pieces which may be too big to boil.

Anyone heard of this before?

No, but that's really, really cool. I hope there weren't any traces of soap in there that could poison your tank, though! That would be my only fear. When I had a huge piece of bogwood, I boiled the water, dumped it into a huge bucket (or even a tub if your piece is that big) and soaked it. It took about an hour of scrubbing and soaking, and a LOT of water was wasted...

I ran the dishwasher without soap once before adding the wood to get rid of any soap which might be hanging around, then added the wood and put the dishwasher through 2 cycles.

I think it's a great idea. I can't believe i've never thought of it before. :good:

here is what i did and it was easy if u can put ur piece in a 5 gal bucket do that fill the bucket up with water and let it sit for about a week, changing the water every 2 days or so until the water doesnt look like pee anymore is easy and u dont risk getting soap on ur wood

To be safe, you could boil it in a bucket after putting it through the dishwasher. That would get rid of the soap.

a trip round mum's dishwasher might be in order this weekend then? i have just got quite a big lump of bog wood had it soaking in a bucket and kept turning it over. (didn't fit in the bucket) i think the worst of the 'pee water' is out, but i only left it soaking for a day or so, i intend to set the tank up with the bog wood in as it is to give the tank a bit of colour in the water. this wont harm the fish will it?

I haven't heard of using a dishwasher before... but then again I don't seem to mind the colouring the tannin turns my water. There tends to be a bit of colour in my water anyway though from using humaquat.

I have bogwood in alot of my tanks and the thought of putting it in the dishwasher worries me, but if it works then great

I don't have one and boil my bits (ooer missus) in a huge pan each day for at least a week until the tannins slow down.

Only two of my tanks have the tanin stain effect from the wood, but the tetra love it and the bit that's going in my dwarf puffs tank will also make them feel more at home too providing it actually leaches out. The bit in there at the moment doesn't

that what i plan to do with my tank for my Piranha, a little dark and murky? any ideas how lang it will last?

A perfect post for me to read! :good:

I have just ordered some bogwood, and was wondering how to soak it...!

I'm not to sure if my mother in law will let me use her dishwasher though!

I suspect I may end up scrubbing the wood in the bath...

Is a week the sort of minimum time for soaking?

After it went in the dishwasher twice was that it ready for the tank?

Depends on the individual bit of wood tbh. You'll want to soak any bit before putting it in a tank so it's waterlogged anyway.

Once again, it depends on the individual bit of wood. I had one bit I was boiling, soaking etc for over 3 weeks and it was still leaching...still does to this day so I put up with it  Other bits don't leach at all.

Can't commment on the dishwasher method...not sure about it myself :)

i have heard of that before, but for treating drift wood. nice idea though. why are you so intent on getting rid of all the tannins? a good soak for 24 hours with two water changes will ensure, as much as possible, that the wood is safe. tannins are actually very good for your fish and inverts, and will reduce over time with water changes. seems silly to junk something that is actually good for your stock!

If its small enough just stick it in the toilet sistern, that way everytime you flush the water is replaced with fresh :) (Tis and old LR curing trick).
