i have just brought 2 pieces of bog wood today.how long do i soak it for before i put it into my tank?
is it best to use boiling water??
they are both about 17inches in length

i have never had bogwood before just wondered why all this has to be done??

thanks

soak it in boiling water just leave it over night in the water to go cold then take it out depending how dark the water is you could soak it again if the waters very tea coloured
i dont soak mine at all i just rinse mine under the shower but i like the tannings to make my water like it would be in nature

Spray, Soak, Spray, Soak, Spray, Soak.

Boiling water, leave it a few hours each time.
Might not need doing so much, but I did it like this to make sure it was perfect.

Is it real bog wood or just aquarium wood?

I just wash my mopani wood soak for a few days and put in. I don't mind the tannins and the fish like them. After a few months they the tannins are little to nothing.

its real bog wood
im soaking it in boiling water now

Hi bubble, I boiled mine for 2Hrs then left it to soak for 2 weeks and there was still a little stain coming out!
I have been told that Carbon in your filter will sort it out! Change your Carbon every 3-4 weeks.

Hope this helps

All wood I have in my tanks i tend to soak under the shower give it a good blast, have one boiling kettle over it to clean it, decide where its going and pop it in. The tanks went a tiny bit brown but after water change which i do anyway it looks crystalllll clear :good:

regarding tannins i think tank size is a factor ie if you put a large peice in a small tank the water will go browner where as a smaller peice in a large tank wont have as much of an impact!

well i left it in soak in boiling water all night.
just emptied the water out.im glad i did soak it as it water was really orange.
i have just sprayed it and then im going to leave it to soak in boiling water again.i will do this untill the water is clear.

thanks for the advise guys :)

how big is the tank its going in ?
if you keep soaking it untill the water is clear you could be at it a while lol
the tannins are quite beneficial to your tank and future water changes will get rid of the rest over time

Definately use atleast hot water, if not boiling, will get the tannins out quicker :good: had my wood in my tank proberly about 5 months now waters still a bit tinted but i prefer it like that, still crystal clear, just gets clearer with water changes

ok well i will leave it in soak then later i will empty it then put another load of boiling water in it then put it in the tank 2ommorow morning

I have wood in a small tank that has been in there for well over 6 months. After a large water change it takes a few days before the water is again tinted orange. I rather like the water tint so it is fine in my tank but if I didn't like it I would still be soaking that bit of wood.
