Bog Wood

None of the LFS sell bog/dift wood so I went looking for my own. I found some nice pieces but I don't know if its safe for an aquarium. Is there any kind of wood I should not use? such as cedar or birch? Also does wood increase or decrease the PH?

I believe most woods are fine for the tank as long as they are totally dry, Ie no sap
