hiya i have 5 rainbow fish in my tank, 2 of which are definately males and the rest either females or too young to tell! i got these rainbow fish all at the same time and 2 of them have grown much bigger and have amazing colours, which is why i believe they are males. however even the males are only 2.5 inches long full lenghts and the females not far behind. due to the bright color flashes the males are showing and the aggression towards the females its clear they are ready to breed? this has been going on for months now though so why havent they bred? i think the females are too young to breed? but there all the same age so im kinda stuck. can i have some tips on how to induce breeding? do they prefer to spawn on slate, moss, rocks ect? thanks

Have your males started sporting breeding colouration yet? My male's cheeks go a dark indigo colour and the top of his head goes bright white; like he's been snowed on. Mine only does this for the hour or two in the morning when he's courting a female; he does an up and down sweeping swimming pattern like a fairground pirate ship ride too.

It's hard to notice but when the females are thinking about spawning the orange lateral stripes stand out very boldly and the base silvery colour becomes a sort of greenish colour.

yes my males are dislaying all the signs of breeding. esecially in the moring when there colours are really dark. its odd because the females just run away from the males and thats it. its like they know the mnales want to breed but just dont care or there not ready. the females dont have much colour and i havent noticed what you just said but i shall see if i notice anything from now on with the females. do you know what spawning surface they prefer. i heard water changes in the morning followed by bloodworm/brineshrimp is supposed to induce spawning but i have noticed nothing :/

Do you have pics of the females? Males are normally not aggressive to females and non-dominate males can look very pale like females.

also the brightest male which i believe to be the dominant male did hang around with a female for a few days in the same spot asif they were getting ready to breed in that spot but nothing happened lol

Its often easier to post photos by using a hosting site like photobucket then linking them here. Rainbows are scatters and they will eat their eggs. If they are breeding you need a spawning mop if you want to protect any of their eggs. Also one thing about rainbow fish is getting the eggs is the easy part. Raising fry will take a few types of live cultured foods and lots of patience.
