Walked into a pet store the other day, and all (25) tanks had Blue water.... I asked about this, & was told it's only for display purposes.... "it looks nice" & prevents any potential diseases.....

I do not buy at any fish store where medication is visible in the water. No matter how healthy the fish may look.....

& then also, ..... most pet stores (nowadays) has no gravel in the tanks with only a box filter or just and airstone........ Is the Blue water and no gravel thing the norm at your pet store??.....

nar only when meds are in there, tho what i did see at Dobbies a few days a go was a half filled tank with a *dry ice* effect smoking over the surface.. was nice, but what good is a half filled tank to anyone

I know the stuff they put in betta cups that makes it blue is an antifungal medication. Most stores seem to use it as an excuse not to change the water. Usually I don't see it in the better stores, and if I do, I take it as a sign not to buy anything this week.

Haha it looks Nice... They are Bull ####ting you most likely all there fish are sick.

My LFS has clear water and gravel bottoms. The saltwater section has clear water and bare bottoms. No blue water at all, not even the bettas they sell. If memory serves the medication that tints the water blue has a lot of copper in it. I wouldn't wanna toss a fish soaking in it in a tank with inverts.

was that in the newt display? because they had it in the newt display at my dobbies, i asked the guy about it and he said it was just for effect. On a side note, how do people rate the fish at dobbies?

i bought my baby oscar there and i am well impressed with the quality of fish, and the guy that runs the department gave me fab advice and answered all my questions
i would defo buy fish from there again

usually when it is blue it is a med containing methylene blue so theyre obviously treating tanks for some sort of fungal infection probably

Methylene blue or malachite green in a tank means to check back in a week or two and see if they have any live fish you might want. You do not want fish while they are still being treated and they won't even tell you what they are treating for.

Some stores will treat to help prevent disease in the first place.

That's a poor practice, though. Overuse of antibiotics has been responsible for the emergence of "superbug" strains, and even smaller scale misuse promotes resistant strains. Most of the stores in my area medicate their betta cups to prevent fungus, but virtually all of them have loose food and waste growing white fuzz in the cups. Prevention and treatment are two different things - you don't treat for prevention.

And then also,.. a number of pet stores insist when you are buying fish, they HAVE to put oxygen pills in the bag... (& charge you for it)....

I've shipped fish to my son some 7 hours driving from here, & just blew up the bags with a simple air pump & no problem.... Why Oxygen pills??....
