I have one blue tetra. Boehlkea fredcochui [Cochu's blue tetra]

URM..... Basically the situation is that i only have one.... this being the reason that they are a pain and i am waiting for them to slowly fade away from my tank. Currently its in my tank downstairs 130l aqua one. i dont know if you know this ....but these are pretty tall tanks!!!! whenever i do a water change this fish jumps out! and goes flying on to the floor! i am 5ft5 and the other day it went flying abot 30cm over my head! and the other day it flew into my hoody!

it seems ok but surely everytime he goes flying out ....IT IS A LONG DROP!

it must hurt itself???

Are they known to jump ? how can i stop this?

i am VERY gentle when i open the lid, do water changes etc....how can i stop this fish?????? HELP!

filaman.ifm-geomar.de/.../jpg/tn_Bofre_u2.jpg I THINK THIS WILL LEAD YOU TO A IMAGE!!!

it's jumping cos it's easily spooked cos it's got no friends. to stop it you need to get it 5 more friends of the same sort or at least other tetra's of a similar colouring

THEY USED TO DO IT IN GROUPS??? my mum has neons and pahntom tetra and glowlight in there??? what would you suggest?

fish quite often jump when they're spooked by something or when they're not happy with they're home or water conditions. some species are more prone to it than others.

whats the tank decor like? does he have a lot of hiding places? what are your water stats? what's your maintenance routine? what's your full stock list?

yeah, your overstocked and your filters not coping, you shouldn't have any reading for nitrite.

the poor water quality and poor stocking is making the fish skittish and therefore he's jumping every chance he gets.

you need to sort out the stocking so your fish are in schools of 6+ (except the plec which is fine alone, and the barb which i think should be kept in a group of 3) and get rid of some fish, also do frequent small water changes to get the water quality sorted out. you could also think about upgrading your filter

number 1 - this is not my tank
number 2 - it isnt overstocked at all there is alot of available space.
number 3 - the rosey barb actually belongs to me as i have two more tanks of my own and its partner is being treated in a hospital tank.

i am just estimating the nitrite reading to be honest as i am at work and i am having to sort things at the moment

The tank had ich in and ive added treatment so to be honest i havent tested because i wasnt sure if this would effect quality.

would the ich be the root cause?????

ich is most often caused from poor water quality.

estimating a reading is fat all good to us, best to wait until you can get a proper reading and post that and we can then help you.

NO my mum has habbit of just adding fish! and not straining the water from the lfs. i think she put infected fish in!

cochu's are pretty hyper anyway, and of course if there is a water quality problem that would exacerbate it- so get back to us about that. What's the footprint of the tank?

Thankyou dwarf gourami. it really bugs me when people get on there high horse and give you abuse instead of help! i feel that there is far to much of that on this forum! newbies come for help and they just get abliterated for making mistakes that any new fishkeeper is bound to stumble on!

They are fiesty guys and i do measure my mums water qualitys weekly. and have had no problems bar the white spot which is due to her adding infected fish ithink

whos to say im not a beginner??? if i was i would be frightened off by you lot some of the comments left to people on here!

i understand it is all helpful but some times you all put it very bluntly and all gang up!
