blackops... it would help to know your location.

That actually doesn't help us all that much. Cambridge UK or Massachusetts?

OK, sorry, but got very confused a while back advising someone where to shop when they turned out to be in Massachusetts.

There's a variety of black sand out there, ranging from properly black stuff (which I think looks more artificial) to more of a dark gray. My preference is towards the more natural look, and at the moment I'd be heading somewhere like Swell for the limpopo black sand. There used to be a selection of online pharmacies that sold it for no apparently good reason but last time I looked they were all out of stock, but the prices were amazing.

If you want the darker, properly black stuff, then consider the Taihaitan moon sand. Last I bought any of this was from Seapets, but it was a while back now.

There are also aggregate places that will sell sand, I've not used this place but know people who have and have had good experiences, http://www.specialistaggregates.com/sand-volcanic-black-fine-p-214.html

Finally there's the option of black blasting sand and pool filter sand, but I've found both quite difficult to source in the UK.

I think the best black sand you can get would be the unipac black sand. It's up on ebay for £30 pounds I believe.

Any black sand or fine gravel is pretty much ok, though personally i don't like silica sand.

I use a black fine gravel thats from a garden centre, rinsed it really well and have had no issues at all to date.

Forgot to mention - fine sand is best if you're planning on having cories or loaches.
