As much as the subject says it all, my BGK had his tail bitten clean off last night, and it's hiding behind the filter inlet this morning. I'm pretty sure the culprit is a senegal bichir.... so, I've got a couple of questions

1) I probably ned to re-home the eel, don't I?

2) Should I add melafix to the water for an antibacterial?

3) Will its tail grow back?

4) On second inspection, it has a pretty bad fungus on whats left of its tail, and it seems to not be able to right itself from its side, sitting at the top of the water... what should I do now? I'm definently going to rehome the eel TODAY... in fact, as soon as the fish store opens.

1) Yes
2) Yes, as well as Pimafix (for anti-fungal) and I would also recommend 10 ml of Stress Coat for every 10 gallons to help replace his slime coat and ward off disease.
3)It might, it might not. I had a platy that had the majority of his tail taken off when he got caught in a power head that one of the fish had knocked the sponge cover off of and it grew back.
4)If by "he can't right himself from his side" you mean he is unable to mantain balance and is floating at the top, then he is probably going into shock and will probably die, or he may have developed an internal infection and cannot control his swim bladder which means you should treat him with a broad-spectrum anti-biotic such as minocycline or tetracycline (WARNING: THIS WILL WIPE OUT YOUR BIOLOGICAL FILTER COLONY).
