Biorb What To Do With It

Ive been looking to set up a fry tank for Corys and recently have been given a BiOrb. Can this be converted to be any use for that or should I just get rid of it. (I would have no other use for it).

I'd get rid of it, Corys are bottom fish, so do better with a large and sandy bottom (which isn't possible in a BiOrb).

A large sandy bottom is possible in a biorb.

It just means modifying the filtration.

Why get rid of a free tank?

OK, so its not ideal, but you could :

Remove the UG filtration, place a few large rocks in the bottom to raise bottom, fill with sand to 'x' level (this should preven a huge 'dense' area of sand which would go anaerobic quickly).

If you keep the filter column from the UG in place, you can easily modify it to become a 'stand' for a small internal filter, e'viola!

Thanks thats an interesting idea. Ok so if I do all that what sort of internal filter would you go with considering id be using it for fry?

OK thats good thanks. Finally the BiOrb Ive been given was obviously for coldwater fish as it has no heater. I have a back up heater but its pretty big and not sure how to fix it in a bowl, where would it be best to fit one in this sort of tank so its safe for the fry?

Brilliant! Thanks everyone, I reckon this could just work, It should look ok and looking at the tank once the rocks and sand go in the bottom surface should be pretty big, shouldnt cost too much either.

I converted my biube in my sig. Only thing is, I dont think it works aswell with biorbs, im not even sure you can replace the bottom filter, isnt it attached to the bottom in a biorb

Lol sorry should have read more in-depth, yeah if you are covering it thats absolutely fine, like nurglespuss said, just put something in the bottom then cover with sand, sponge filter would prob be the easiest

Yes will definitely go with that sponge filter and try and sit it on top of the pipe. Ill buy a new heater and the stand that was advised. Ill have to go to a shop to look at the filters so I can get an idea of how to attach it and how it will work.

Would you just use a few flattish rocks to go up an inch or two and then fill over with sand until I get a decent surface area?

Had a look at your tank and I like the rocks which I presume are covered in moss? That could be useful I would have thought for the fry.

Cant you just remove the pipe section? and leave the bottom tray bit that it sits in?

Yeah you could use whatever I suppose, even gravel

Moss rocks? I think you're actually looking at the moss balls lol
