Biological Filter Media

What are peoples views on replacing such media? The instructions on most if not all say "replace half every 3/6 months" I have had ceramics in my external for around 2 years with no problems. Now iv`e just picked up some Rena Bio Chem Stars at a mega bargain price but to get them in my filter i had to remove some ceramics. If i rinse the old ceramics can they be re-used?

I use Biomax and Matrix and you should never have to replace it.

Yeh, ceramic media never needs to be replaced, sponge or cotton needs to be replaced, only when it is litarally falling apart in your hands

i wouldn't replace Ceramic mania with the Bio statrs, though i would use them in the mechanical section.

I guess it depends on which ceramic media you have. but Bio stars are no better, as you get less area because if their shape, probably worse. on surface area/volume
especially as you have had you current media for several years, with no problems.

i do have bio stars. but they are used in a filer with loose media.
over time, the bio media goes down (bits stick to floss lids and the like). so instead of buying new Efhisubstrat, i just added some stars i have to make up the difference.

actually, on the above.

most loose, irregular shapes ceramic media. does crumble over time. so, whilst you may not need to change out you media, it will still need topping up.
my substrate pro, looks the same now, as it did 5 years ago, when new. with no crumbling and few losses. but the little sods are round, so i've chaced a few round the floor. lol.
