I have made a big mistake.....Impulse buy and bad advice from the Lfs ????

Recently bought a pair of Hemichromis bimaculatus (AFRICAN Jewel Cichlid) from the Lfs who advised me that there should not be a problem keeping them in my current 75g. After a few days of tranquility all hell has broken loose, the Jewels are going at it "Hammer and Tongs", they dont appear to be doing any damage to each other and at the moment no damage has been done to the other occupants.

African Thread

I know I should have done some research as I thought these were SA.

I have just phoned the Lfs and they have agreed to take them back. :good:

Now, what I would like is a couple of large SA Cichlids to add to my tank and would like some advice as to what could be added?

Would like to add:-
2 x Heros efasciatus

Current Stocking

75 Gallon..........48 x 18 x 22.
2 x Hemichromis bimaculatus
1 x Aequidens pulcher
1 x Geophagus Steindachneri
10 x Barbus tetrazona
6 x Melanotaenia boesemani
1 x Ancistrus spp.

severums, festivums, geophagus surinamensis, firemouths, angelfish, cichlasoma sajica or spilurum, how big do you want them?

firemouths are great...they add wonderful color and action to a tank. i think it would go good in your tank. I have a 2 inch firemouth right now in my quarintine tank for about 2 more weeks. He is in there with an 3/4" turqouise severum. He is not aggressive towards the sev. Severums are also wonderful fish as well, very nice hardy fish and pretty as well. If you get a severum don't make the mistake I did and buy a 1/2" fish. I now have to have him in my quarintine tank for a few months unitl he grows to a suitable size for my 100 gallon. But they are wonderful wet pets. :good:

We have a pair of male Green (Turquoise) Severums. They're nice fish... very conscious of things outside the tank... they know when I get home, and they beg for attention (i.e. food). :hyper:

I'd try to get a "pair" if possible. Not just two, but a male and female that get along. Pretty rare that they'll breed,. Severums, are pretty easy going, but they're still cichlids, which means they're territorial. One of ours kinda bullies the other... just here and there. Not all the time, but I wish we had two that didn't.

Agree with the Angels, had a long think on them and decided NO.

One of the Jewels was harrased to death a couple of days ago and the other is being returned later today.

I like the idea of the Severum(s), would two not be pushing it a bit in a 75g with a Blue Acara?

How about one Sev and a Firemoth?

two sevs may be pushing a little bit, a sev and a firemouth would be great. both beautiful fish

Well, the Lfs were reluctant to have the Jewel back, but with a little persuasion they replaced it with a lovely looking green Severum approx 6" long.

Being a bit shy at the moment

Pretty Sev !

He won't be shy for long. Mine eats from my hand :good:

Looks like a gold Sev to me though.

Deffinately Green, I think........Just had another look and it looks Green, well a light green. I`ll try and get a better pic.

Seriously...eats from your hand  I`ll let it settle a while before I start teching tricks.

Thanks.

Yes he does ! I have to be careful though 'cause he gets my fingers too. I use big pieces of freeze dried shrimp or lettuce.

Here's my baby green girl....such a cutie !

Thought about that, Yes there are some live as well as artificial, guess i`ll have to wait and see if its a pure vegitarian.

I say "it", not sure of the sex yet!!!

does it have squiggle-like markings on it's face? towards his mouth? if it does then it's most likely a male if not then female.

this is a female
