Cardinals are good, if you can get them, a little more expensive than neons but better IMO (although a mixed shoal looks rather good :lol:

)

I'm probably going to go for more cories, seeing as I have the room and seeing as 6 would be rather boring.

Neons aren't as wimpy as everyone says. Many people put Neons in a new tank with success. Especially if you are fishless cycling -- you are building up a pretty good bacteria load in fishless cycling vs where in fish in cycling, you are really only building enough bacteria to support the fishload that you are using to cycle the tank.

I think you'd be fine and if you really want to try them, give it a shot. I bet you'll be successful.

I think the problem is Neon Tetras are very common fish and many beginners start off with them. This means many people often have to do fish-in cycles with them in which case the Neons are fragile. With the correct water conditions I think I should be fine, as you have said.
