My friend had like 5 bettas as centerpieces for her wedding. I took one home and I still have him. The other ones were either taken home by other guests or taken back to the store.
Now the one problem I did have was that one of my friends was putting alcohol in the bowls.
I got extremely pissed off at her and still dont let her forget that I was angry that she did that.
Most of the people at that wedding were older and knew how to treat fish with respect. I thought it was a bit risky for the fish, but she knew I was taking one home and so she purposely put me at a table with one. She only had them on some of the tables, and other tables had other centerpieces. She made sure that the fish were taken care of after the wedding, either going home with someone or back to the store. There werent many to have to deal with.
Bettas can live in smaller bowls and be content. They were in small bowl at the wedding and put into travel cups(like at stores) for people to take home. For one night they can be in a bowl, so dont get all uptight because someone put a betta in a small bowl for a day. It doesnt inconvenience them in the least.
No it probably wasnt the smartest idea to have fish, but for good measure, they were really pretty. I still have my Jack
and he's living happily in his 2 gallon tank. I take great care of him and he's still going strong.
Other than the alcohol incident, there were no other problems with the fish. So dont get all upset when you dont really know what's going on. Do you know that the fish were being tortured or mistreated? Those are just assumptions, and unless you witness the abuse, you really have no argument. Sorry for my harshness, it's just that i read a lot of these kinds of posts about people complaining about something someone did that THEY think was unethical. It's annoying, and yes I know I dont have to read it. The only reason I posted on this one is because it was something personal for me.

not too fond of the idea either!
I could just see it now... me at a wedding... running from table to table rescuing bettas... the wedding party chasing me around...
