Hey all,
So i've been keeping livebearers for quite a while now and wanted to change it up, i decided i want to get a betta. I just have a few questions...

1. are there any different requirements?
2. Should i get a male or female?
3. do they need a heater (my normal room temp is about 21 degrees although can be lower at night
4. what food do they eat?

1. Apart from bettas preferring softer water than livebearers, their requirements are pretty much the same. Males do need a gentler water flow than most fish and decor with no sharp/rough edges that will cut their fins.
2. Whichever you prefer.
3. Yes they do need a heater. Their temp needs to be 72 to 82 F (24.5 to 28 C).
4. They prefer floating food. I feed mine Hikari betta pellets, though I would use Atisons if I could get it in a smaller tub - the size I can find would last several times longer than the use by date with just one betta. And live or frozen food once a week.

That 15g tub is the one that's too big. A 5g pack of Hikari Betta BioGold lasts forever with one betta :)
