My betta was living in a 1 gallon fish bowl on our coffee table. He seemed very happy. He ate like a pig all the time and would flair at me whenever I came to the bowl. I woke up yesterday morning and found him laying on the carpet about 2 feet away from the table! He had jumped out, flopped a good foot off the coffee table, then another foot on the carpet. I couldn't believe it. I felt so bad. Anywho, now were going to get another one. But not right away. We have to grief for our poor Charlie.

please dont add bettas to fishbowls, bettas are jumpers and will jump out of them. a small 1-5g tank is just as cheap and is alot safer than an open fishbowl.

how is a 1g tank safer than a 1g bowl? Same amount of water to pollute and it doesn't necessarily come with a lid.

In any case, bettas are jumpers and lids are necessary or you always run the risk of waking up to crispy betta  with a bowl, you can put saran wrap (with holes poked in), or lace, or things like that over the rim and strap 'em down with a rubber band.

do you not think a tank with a lid will look better than a bowl with a bit lace secured with a rubber band!!!!, a lot easier to feed your fish!!

that's not the point, really... i only gave an example of what she could do with what she's got. Not to mention that if you feed pellets they'll go right through the lace...

Cloth should work. Put some decorative table cloth over the top. Or a mesh. Mesh is best.

i like the idea of some kind of cloth over the bowl. Ill have to look into getting some kind of material before we get our next fish.

I was thinking about getting some crafting wire and some bridal netting to make some "fitted" lids for some of our containers until we can get all of our bettas into aquariums. That would work, don't you think?

i would think that would work fine.

A local mom and pop fish store actually sells fabric tops for bowls they have elastic around the outside so it can fit most size bowls.

Yes just make sure it is fitted somehow. You wouldn't want the cloth to fall into the bowl, making it impossible for him to come up for air!

just drop the water level 1-2 inches from the top, then you shouldnt have a problem. ive had many betta, and most of the ones i had cant seem to jump that high
