Betta Problem

I did read your post about flukes and am trying to see where i can find some fluke medication. Not easy given my options are limited in terms on shops etc.

He is on his own, in his own tank. When he was put into the other tank, he was in a floating compartment thingy.

Just quickly wanted to add two things:

1) If your betta does have flukes then putting him into another tank with another fish can cause that healthy fish to become infested with flukes also... so, definitely keep him away from other fish. You'll need to keep an eye on the fish in your other tank that you floated your sick fish in. First signs of any flicking/scraping etc, start treating them with the same fluke meds.

2) Even though your sick betta was in a floating box - he would still have been able to see the other betta swimnming around in the tank, causing stress. Even healthy male bettas should be kept separate from each other and if tanks are positioned side by side it's always a good idea to put something between the two tanks (like a piece of cardboard/paper or printed background poster) so that they don't have to eyeball each other and get annoyed LOL

Hope you manage to get hold of some meds asap. There are some online shops that deliver next day if your LFS doesn't sell anything appropriate.

Good luck - Athena

Can anyone recommend a good brand of Anti Fluke for me to try and get?

...for example, Sterazin, as mentioned in my first post. I've always used Waterlife brands and they haven't let me down yet.

Regards, Athena

I have got Waterlife Myxazin which i treated him with before, ran the whole 5 day course. It contains Malachite Green, but not as the main active ingrediant.

contains:

formaldehyde 0,12%
malachite green 0.085%
Acriflavine Hydrochloride 0.055%

Now I know that isnt the right stuff. Im going to have to make a mission somewhere tomorrow to get the right stuff.

GREAT!! Although the meds i mentioned above are supposed to treat fin rot!

the finrot is likely secondary due to his immune system being down. keep in mind that there are ALWAYS bad beasties in the water with our fish no matter how clean we keep the tanks. a healthy fish can fight it off. stressed fish succumb.
id give it another round with the meds you have on hand and see if he improves more. in the meantime continue your search. sometimes two rounds is needed for any illness.
all the best.
cheers

Thanks for that!

I have bought some Sterazine off Ebay along with Melafix. Hopefully this should now sort him out. just gotta wait for the good to arrive.

Will keep updated on how it goes, and yes i know i cant medicate both meds at the same time.

Got some waterlife sterazin on Saturday and have dosed then and yesterday.

Still no change yet.

:(

This morning, istead of normally just sitting on the bottom he is floating near the surface....so i am optimistic, however, diet still not good and his eyes are still very clouded.

Still no change...in fact i think he looks worse!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eyes very clouded, not eating. Hardly swimming.

Im becoming very fed-up with this, having spent money on meds that dont seem to work. Does ANYBODY have any clues or anything else i could try to get this fish right???

Im at my wits end here!!!

Hi there! Got your PM just now - sorry I wasn't logged in earlier.

Oh dear, it's not looking good is it? I think what's happened is just as someone else suggested, your Betta has probably got a secondary bacterial disease. This often happens in fish that start off with an illness that isn't medicated properly early on and this, in turn, paves the way for secondary illnesses due to their lowered immune system.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can mix both Myxazin and Sterazin together - and before you began treating with the Sterazin did you do a water change, along with gravel vac to remove as much of the previous dosing of Myxazin as poss?

It's a long time since I've used Melafix so I'm unsure if you can dose that along with the Sterazin (someone else might know for sure). If not, continue the course for Sterazin to the end, then do a water change/gravel vac (and if you feel there's time, run your filter with a charcoal pad in it to remove unwanted meds - then you can begin treating for the bacterial infection. If you're allowed to treat with both at the same time, even better.

By the way, Melafix is brilliant for healing torn/raggedy fins, as well as being antiseptic for treating bacterial problems. You have to be very careful with the dose, though, as even a few drops too much can do more harm than good as it is quite strong stuff and can cause irritation.

Whilst treating for flukes and using the Sterazin, don't worry too much if your Betta isn't eating because it's best not to feed them during this time until they start to show signs of improvement. Then feed sparingly to begin with. Even us humans go off our food when we're not well  . The more food you add to the tank that goes uneaten will just rot.

Wish I could wave a magic wand for you to make your Betta better (ha!) - this all does seem very long-winded, I know, but we just have to try as best we can to help the little guy.

Will check in on the forum again tomorrow to see if there's any update.

Regards - Athena
