i have a betta with mouth fungus and initially some eye cloud. a maracyn 1/2 combo removed the eye cloud, and a furan-2/kanaplex combo removed about 2/3 of the mouth fungus.

i was treating with another furan-2/kanaplex combo when symptoms grew worse (white rings around eyes reappeared, mouth fungus grew back a little, and now a red sore on the betta's lip).

the betta is in an uncycled, filterless hospital tank with a heater, thermometer (temp is at 75F), and an airstone. pH is at 7.1 and i never let the ammonia go beyond 0.5 ppm.

what should i do to help the betta stay alive so it can get better? most of the time, it's hiding inside the cave ornament with all fins clamped.

The stress from the ammonia level is causing the columnaris to get worse. To be honest, you would be better off putting the betta in clean water than in medicated water with .5ppm of ammonia. If the columnaris is not such a virulent strain that the betta is dead, clean water and good filtration may be enough to clear it up. There is no use trying to cycle a tank when treating with antibiotics they kill all the bacteria.
