My bettas recently bred and I was wondering what food was best to feed them first? I have Hikeri First Bites ( powdered stuff ), baby brine shrimp, or Rotifers?

Hi

It depends how old they are now. I fed mine on microworms, waterworms for the first week to 10 days and then started them on baby brine shrimp. I still give microworms for a change now and then.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately it is near impossible to get Microworms here. In the past I hav'nt had much trouble feeding without Microworms, but it would be nice to be able to get my hands on a culture close by.

You can get them on ebay on the link below and they ship worldwide.

Netty, i would be happy to help the guy out but i dont think he can wait long as the fry are already born :(

If i sent him some (free of course :) - as he seems to need them urgent, How long would it take to get to canada?

Or couldnt he just do the hard bolied eggs thingy?

I would think it would take at least a week to get to Canada but I could be wrong. The egg yolk would be fine for them.......just put some yolk in a hanky and swish it around in the water. Not sure how old his fry are though.

I think rotifers are small enough for them to eat- give them a try. They will eat BBS after about a week, and I've never got them to eat a powdered food.

The fry are around 2 and an half days old. I would normally know their age exactly but they bred when I was'nt home and I did not see the eggs either. But it has been around 2 days since I seen the first few wriglers. I took the male out as he was quiting his fartherly duties and eating the unhatched eggs ( this was his first time breeding). At the moment some fry a free swimming, but some are hanging on the glass, plants and whats left of the bubblenest. Normally I avoid this stage because the male usually takes care of them up to this point, but not this time. Well thanks for the suggestions and I'll give the egg yolk a try, and continue feeding rotifers just case they are small enough.

Im no expert but i think i read on here somewhere that if the male quits early and there is some still not free swimming, its best to lower the water a couple more inches, i guess this is so they can shoot to surface easier.

Yup, thats what I did right away. But now from what I can see they are all pretty much free swimming and mainly at the surface scooting around. I'm going to try the egg yolk method today, and also try to get some liquid fry ( not sure if I have seen any around here ).

Good luck and keep us up to date on how they are doing :good:

i used wardleys liquid fry for the first week then decapsulated brine shrimp, the egg thing works ok too, just do alot of water changes cause it rots quick, try adding a CLEAN live plant for some umm how u spell it? infusioum? by clean i mean out of a adult tank that is healthy and has no sickness or illlness. infusioum is little plant bugs i think that tiny babies like to eat, how many u think u got?

My last brood is a little over month old now, and I raised the fry with a culture of some kind of aquatic worm that showed up in the tank after putting a couple drops of pond starter in the water. Now I've tried some of the culture in the adult betta tanks, and it looks like even the adult bettas eat the larger worms.

I think I have around 15 I think. Because the male stopped his duties, I lost some eggs. But 15 is good for me, I'd rather have 15 then 100 Lol. I have been feeding them the egg yolk, but I don't really notice them going after it , because it is so small its hard to tell. When they became free swimming I placed some live plants in there from the fathers tank aswell. In a few more days I'm going to try them on some Rotifers and baby brine shrimp. I'm also thinking in a couple of weeks or so, I might put some pygmy cories in there just to help out on the cleaning. I have done this in the past and it seems to work pretty good, because I find that the cories don't add much bio-load to the tank.
