hey everyone on this section, i have a few questions as i'm still a newbie
got myself another tank (new to me but second hand) about two weeks back, i'd think i'm about half way through my fishless cycle
once its cycled properly i plan on getting a betta, here's where the questions come in....
1. My heater is stuck on 22c, is this sufficiently warm for a betta?
2. Is it worth getting an imported betta instead of one from any of the local shops?
3. Are bettas compatible with the following:
Leopard Danio
Platies
Peppered Cory
hilstream loach
Rummy nose tettra
Glowlight Tettra
these are the fish i was planning on having in the tank as well, the only one i have to stick to is the betta.
Hope someone can help me out here, thanks.

Hello RDG :)

1. I would recommend at least 25 temperature wise

2. Imported or shop bought, its down to your personal choice. Obviously youl pay alot more with a import (in most cases)

3. I would say platies and cories from the list, depending on the individual betta and also the size of the tank.

Hi there and welcome :D The temperature of your tank needs to be around 26. 22 is too low.

How big is your tank? Corys are great tank mates for bettas. I have never had a problem with my bettas and platys. I don't know about tetras and danios but I'm sure someone else will advise you there! :good:

You'll have to get some pics uploaded when your tank is occupied :good:

As for where to get your betta,- it is totally up to you! Some lfs have some super bettas in store. I think it depends a lot on location. My lfs only ever stock the odd blue VT. Never a choice of colour or tail type  You have a lot more choice online and there are a number of sellers/breeders that members on here have used regularly (in the UK). E-bay is always a good bet :good: There is a seller on e-bay called Roxy who both breeds and imports. She always has 'pet' bettas for sale, and more than often also sells show grade bettas if that was more your want :D :good:

I have never had a problem with my danios and my betta.

my betta was never bothered with the danios or platys but he's a softie... some bettas dont mix with danios as danios are very lively and fast, sometimes they might fin nip as well...

What size is the tank? this will depend on what other fish you can keep :good:

out of your list though:

Leopard Danio - personally for me too active for a bettas liking, might be ok with a Shortfin (Plakat) male, wouldn't risk a long fin
Platies - I have platies with my females and a shortfin male all fine
Peppered Cory - cories make 1 of the best tankmates for bettas :good:
hilstream loach - again a great choice just make sure there not small enough to eat
Rummy nose tetra - prefer higher temps? depending on tank size you could get away with a group of non-nippy tetra
Glowlight Tetra - above :)

it doesn't matter where you get your betta, i have both store brought (some rescues brought back from near deaf) and imports, its down to preference

thanks for the advice everyone
i'll make sure i get a new heater before getting a betta
sorry forgot to mention its a 110 litre tank
i'll get some pics up of the tank in the morning
already got it planted and made a slate cave for the tank myself
got half sand, half gravel
i'm running a slightly overpowered filter in there as well
this wont affect the betta too much will it? think i've read some threads where people have been in the same situation and it hasn't been a problem

with a stronger filter a shorter finned male will cope so much better, i have 1 in my 125l community.
just a suggestion but have you considered a group of females instead? they will cope with the filter better too, plus not as fussy with tankmates as males are

Hillstream loach need lower temp and plenty of water flow, which bettas probably wont appreciate.
cheers

ok thanks agen everyone.
i'll skip on the loaches
it has to be a male, my dad has always wanted one so getting it for him
tank seemes to be mature now, i put mature media in the filter and in the tank when i set it up
been dosing amonia up to 2ppm and its processing it all in 24hours
think its ok to add some fish yet?
anyway here's a photo of the tank got the tank, heater and filter for £30 second hand
its all set up
