I don't doubt you guys, but I am wondering something...

If females are just as aggressive as males, then why is it acceptable sometimes for them to be tankmates, but males cannot be together even in a fairly large tank?

It's because males will certainly fight to the death if put together but females although they can be as aggressive as males will set up a pecking order in most cases and not kill each other if housed correctly IMO.
