Best Shoaling Fish For A 125l Community Tank

although its already done in my mind!
although its already done in my mind! thats how i do things how are you attaching your java moss. if you use cotton or fish line or anything along the lines of this wrap them tight to prevent anyfish getting caught

(andy)yes rough guide but i would never step over this for safety reasons. you ask any member on this forum, and they will tell you that they would never go over a rough guide. or try to squeeze more in

now can we stop debating and get back to topic please

Ok sorry Lou for the debate with Truck. Back to TOPIC. As i have previously said 1 BN,4 shrimps,15 Harliquins,15 Tetras, 2 Rams would be fine! Add the stocking over a few months, after the tank is cycled. IMO i would add the Harliquins first followed by the Tetras then the Rams followed by the Pleco and the shrimp last. Although you will have to watch the shrimp, the Bristlenose may end up eating them!

put the rams in last that way they wont dominate the tank. adn ill id would start with 2 shoals of 10 and leave it for 2 months. and take water tests if the ammonia, nitrate and nitrites all stay within a few units of each other THEN add the shoals up to 15

but i still think thats taking a risk maybe we should get another member to tell you there opinion.

Nah Rams are timid. Bristlenose last followed by the Shrimp, Plecos and Shrimp are more sensitive to water conditions than the Rams. So should go in after the Rams. Bolivans are more tolerant than Germans.

well i generally stock acording to terortorial issues and water issues. bns wont touch the shrimps. plecos are timid it loachs you should be worried about

just bought a 125l tank, going to plant it, but wondering what the best looking shoaling fish are?

i like black skirt tetra, congos but was hoping for a few other options?

also prob going to put a BN in there for clean up

cheers

tiger barb, red eye tetra, zebra danio

Plecos are opportunist and as Bristlenoses are omnivorous they may take an unsuspecting Shrimp. I didnt say dont get them, i said just watch them. There is a chance that a Bristlenose may take a Shrimp and once it does then the others will follow.

if the pleco is introduced young it shouldnt bother the shrimp. and by the time the plec has reached full maturity it wont think much of the shrimps. just keep him well fed for safety but ive kept full grown BN's with shrimps and no problem at all.

thanks for all the discussion!

so i will add the tetras first!

my BN is very small only about 1.5 inch!

Truckasauras, im attach the java moss with plastic mesh for the back wall and the same for the bottom, its like an envelope! or i will use tight fish line to attach it.

do you know how fast it grows?

also one of my gouramis died last night, he was a dwarf.

I bought them in a pair and both looked healthy, but a few days ago he started to deteriote! are they quite sensitive?

the BN will be fine. ive kept 2 full grown BN's with shrimps. and no problems.

The java moss will grow about 0.5 - 1 inch every 3 weeks or so.

gourami's are generally alright, but when they are breed for certain colours they tend to lose some of there hardienes.
could you pst some water stats?

are you going with 10 of each tetra? (i strongly recomend you dont get any more than 10)
i would add 10 tetras( 5 of each ) and then two weeks later another 10 ( 5 of each)

what would predate on shrimps anyway?

yea i have cleaned my sand thorougly and have put that in my tank along with my slate and bogwood, just waiting on my filter to arrive now, so i can start to fill it up.

moss arrives on thursday, already made plastic mesh envelope so moss just needs to be put in there and left to grow, hopefully will make a well good back wall.

yea wont add fish for a while, want it to be planted first so maybe after a month. will slowly add fish maybe like you said 5 at a time for each shoal.

my stats are ammonia- 0 nitrite-0 nitrate 0/0.12 (hard to tell difference between colours but its more 0

i have a interpet liquid test kit, the only thing i can think of is my ph is slightly high as i have hard water, its about Ph8.

i was going to try and reduce it with a liquid from the pet shop but i was scared of doing more harm than good

i feed them mix of flake/pellets/bloodworm/daphina

leave your ph as it is. as your water matures the PH will come down. and the plants may make a difference. also if you add DIY CO2 that will bring your PH down a bit.

my stats are ammonia- 0 nitrite-0 nitrate 0/0.12 (hard to tell difference between colours but its more 0
sounds good. but then again there are no fish. im likeing the sound of this tank make sure you get pics of setup!

what do you mean by predate

oh sorry, those water stats where for my current tank, dont have any water in the new tank. waiting for the filter to arrive

when the filter arrives i will fill up the tank with water and then put half of my mature media in the new filter and run for a few hours then put a few danios in there to keep the ammonia levels up for the bacteria, ---this ok?

the current tank was where the gourami died, still really unsure why? all the other fish are very happy and active. the old tank should be ok running on half a mature filter as its not heavily stocked, if i do regualr water changes it will still be fine right?
