Yeah that would be fine mate, as for the filtration (if you can) id try get 2 external filters to or 1 FX5 Fluval would do the job perfectly but they are quite an expensive piece of kit.

il get it at trade, work in the back at a fish shop so its all good. but are they quiet? tanks in my room you see so need to be real quiet

Ah that's great then. When you first set them up they make a little noise but as it settles i must admit they are very very quiet. I have one in my bedroom and it certainly doesn't keep me awake lol.

Fluval FX5 - For aquariums up to 1500 L (400 U.S. Gal.)
Surely thats abit much for a 240litre tank

filtration is fine to.
Well that's your choice mate, do you want to pack it full with rock or just have an adequate amount for the fish to get out of the way of others??. Limestone/ocean rock/tufa rock/boulders/ slate there is a lot to choose from? Some rocks effect the PH but as you said previously your PH is up to scratch straight out of the tap so that's all good. What about substrate? I'd recommend sand or crushed coral both work well for a malawi setup. What rock can you get access to mate?

i'd like to use some that don't alter the ph and that have loots of nooks n crannys in for the fish to take refuge or whatever, i think id go for a dark sand substrate but quite a thick grain. What looks good n natural

Well if your going for the dark substrate then limestone/slate and especially boulders would look really good. Just depends if you can get access to them mate
