What's the best kind of fish that will live long in a 29 gallon freshwater tank?

Where to begin... water chemistry would help, any ideas of PH and water hardness in your area?

Depends also what you're looking for, personally I'd go along the lines of:

Corydoras - Schwartzi/Agassizii/Sterbai... the possibilities are endless.
Bristlenose catfish? - King tiger L066... any small plec if you're prepared for the possible mess.
Apistos - Colorful, peaceful, great attention drawer.
Rasboras/Tetras - Activity, makes the tank a bit more lively and colorful.

My tank went through a mini cycle and killed all my fish. Everything is perfect now and only thing I have is a betta.

 Sorry to hear that, glad your betta is okay though, they are great natured fish (99% of the time). Maybe some females to keep him company when your happy with your water conditions again.

Just to confirm, you are not really suggesting combining male and female Bettas in a tank? Even experienced Betta breeders have to watch the tank like a hawk when mxing the sexes and be ready to seperate them in a flash.

Everything is perfect but I am giving up for a while till I know what I am doing

Sorry nobody of the goat, I don't want to start WW3 here.. but by that logic a Betta species tank is impossible; something which I have sustained for 4 years and many others on this forum also. YES, aggression will be shown should the bettas choose to breed and last time I saw that happen one of my females was slightly distressed but recovered fully after a brief seclusion and the removal of the fry...
