Ben's Tropical Tank

Grrr... Plants not sent out yet, and I go on holiday in a week!

I've been thinking about going with an Asian theme for the tank... As it sort of appears to be leaning in that direction as it is.

Anyone know where I can get some bamboo that's safe for aquariums?

Ben.

Are you still thinking of getting a Hydor Ario 4?

If so I would advise against them as I've had two in the past and found them to be a pain, also with fine gravel, it'll get clogged up.

If you want to add more oxygen to your tank, look towards a bubble wall, also having an air pump will increase the noise by quite a bit, just so you know.

Nice looking tank :)

Possibly add 20 Cardinal Tetras :D

This may be of interest. All about bamboo in the aquarium.

Thanks guys!

I almost bought the Hydor Ario 4 in the LFS (£37.99, but worth it apparently :/), but decided against it in the end.

I don't think I'm starving the fish of oxygen... There are plenty of plants now, and they can always go to the surface. Besides, the RTB Shark might get a little territorial over a bubble wall...

I'm thinking of adding a few Cardinals - will they shoal with my Neons? They're the same price in my LFS, so if they shoal together, it might be a possibility.

Plants STILL haven't been sent from eBay. Shame, as I go on holiday in a week, and was hoping to enter this month's TOTM competition :(

In other news though, my g/f's dad (the one who got me into tropical fishkeeping in the first place by giving me his spare tank setup) had a problem with his external filter. Took it apart - two new baby Clown Loaches were blocking the pipes.

They've been rescued!

Kudos on the Fish recue there Ben. Who did you order the plants from? The postal service should be back up to speed now. I ordered a new light bar from Ebay & it was with me two days after postage.

My plants where posted on the 3rd so i am expecting them tomorow or friday.

Actualy i have been thinking. You could make some great hides/caves out of some big bamboo, that would look awsome & would compliment your theme perfectly.

I ordered this; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120649979850&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

eBay UK seller's name is 'bunchofflowers', who owns eBay UK store 'THETROPICALSHOP'.

50 plants, bunched and weighted in groups of 5 - thus equalling 10 seperate bunches, differently sized for foreground and background use.

I ordered before Xmas, and had a message from the seller telling me he didn't want to post over the holidays for fear of damage to the plants. This seemed reasonable, and I agreed, saying that I didn't want a refund and I'd wait 'til after the holidays.

Naturally assuming the seller would post immediately when the post returned to normal, which so far he hasn't. Not especially worried, but in hindsight I should have mentioned I was going away on holiday in January and would need them pretty sharpish after the New Year.

I sent him a message last night telling him this, and asking when he was intending to post them. No reply yet, and the auto reply stated that they were out of office until the 4th of Jan... Which was a few days ago now.

Have to keep an eye on my fish at the moment - one of the Neon Tetra has a solitary large white spot on his fin. No other fish have any, and they're all acting normally, but who knows. The tank runs at 26 degrees, so I was hoping that would keep Ich at bay.

Ben.

EDIT:: I know what you mean on the bamboo front, but it's where to get it?! A quick Google reveals nothing, and my LFS don't have any.

EDIT2:: Yay! Plants posted today apparently, so may get them for tomorrow! Not sure if they'll come on a Saturday delivery instead, but just have to hope they don't spend all weekend in a depot.

The Cardinals should shoal with your neons. My White Cloud Mountain Minnows shoal with my Glowlight Danios sometimes.

I now prefer Cardinal Tetra's to Neons, they're a lot more brighter :)

Thanks for the info, may pick some up next time I'm at the LFS - hopefully it'll teach my existing Neon's to shoal better :shifty:

Ben.

Have you got your plants yet Ben?

Keith.

Guess what didn't turn up today?

Grrrr... Not sure if they will arrive on a Saturday delivery or not, which means my plants will probably be in a depot over the weekend :shout:

Annoyingly, the big red Royal Mail van did stop outside my house today. Excitedly I answered the door, to be handed not one, but two small packages, both addressed to me.

Puzzled as to why the seller would have sent the shipment in two halves, and also as to why the boxes appeared to weigh nothing at all, I proceeded to go at them with a pair of scissors... to reveal... Sunglasses.

Yes, that's right. Sunglasses. My girlfriend obviously ordered them for our upcoming holiday, and had them addressed to me as I would be in to receive them.

well the future is bright !!!!! B-)

Ok, so the plants didn't turn up, which means they're probably sitting in a cold postal depot somewhere.

This seller will be getting negative feedback for posting them so close to the weekend after I'd patiently waited so long for them.

Picked up a few more plants today from the LFS though, and added some Jumbo Cardinal Tetra. They had some very cheap Amazon Sword, so I got a couple of those, and what I can only assume is some variety of Rush.

Hi Ben,
I am really enjoying watching your tank setup unfold.
