2 weeks ago I went to a weekend church men's retreat, at a christian camp about 100 miles away... we had free time Friday afternoon... I was supposed to be signed up for zip lines, but they didn't get enough to do it, and one of the guys from our group was going horse back riding, so I decide to join his group... I've not been in a saddle for 30-40 years, but my uncle had a horse farm, when we were kids, and he would always put me on the "green brokes", not because I was a good rider, but because as he said it, I was more stubborn than the horses... it was with a bunch of "old guys" so they gave me the more spirited horse... it was probably their 1st trail ride of the season, and with new horse hands... the gal that saddled me, was probably 15... several saddles needed retightening while on the ride... we got to an off camber small hill, and my saddle began to rotate... I moved over to the center, but was effectively bare back, at that point... the saddle kept spinning, until it was fully upside down, at which point the horse ( did I mention she was a big girl, as I'm a big guy ) began bucking, she did not like the saddle upside down... me being bare back, I went off easy, the opposite side of the saddle... the problem was, the horse continued to buck, but now, on my legs... my right leg was spared, but she probably jumped up and down 3-4 times on my left leg...

no broken bones, but an extremely bad crush wound on my left leg, calf muscle to ankle... I've been doing 1st aid, most of my life, I didn't go to the doctor at 1st, but as the bruising and blistering continued to come out, for a week, with the pain increasing to nearly unbearable... I went into the ER, a week later, just to check for blood clots... you know it was bad, when anyone that saw me that day took pictures, and the ER doctor on duty, said "I've never seen anything like this... I'm going to consult with a surgeon"

4 hours of tests later, and they said I was doing everything they could have, but did give me a tetanus shot, and some antibiotics... the day it happened, it looked like I skinned my elbow, the next morning, it looked like a train wreck...

I'm still working, and spent part of the day fencing on the farm, but I'm taking more breaks, to put my foot up...

1st picture is right after the trail ride... BTW, I rode the horse out of the woods... don't look at the 2nd picture, taken when I woke the next morning, if a train wreck would make you queasy

it looks and feels much better today, but it seems to be taking it's time getting better... old age isn't for sissies

Ouch - that's exactly why I keep telling my daughter to give up horses and get a motorbike ;). She's a pro - but I have lost count of how many times she has been in an air amublance.
Definitely hear you on the age thing. Almost 2 years after my last broken bones and I'm not yet fully recovered!

Hope you get well soon with no complications

Horses are safer than motorbikes; a lot safer - my sister used to do a lot of horse shows; later in life she became a handler of horses and attended the olympics...

That wound is pretty nasty will take at least a year to heal - though it will mostly be visible - i had a similar but not as bad wound and it was draining 6 months later. It stopped hurting after a couple of weeks but hte actual soft tissue damage was quite extensive.

I'd give whoever saddled that horse a good kick even if she is only 15 years old. I don't blame the horse one bit though one never knows how a horse will react in that situation.

Sorry it happened to you but hindsight wont' magically allow you to re-live the incident. In truth i haven't fallen off a horse since i was 16 or so; the horse brushed an electric fence and started bucking - it wasn't much of a fall just sort of a soft roll on the ground - get back up and get back on sort of thing so i don't want to make much of a deal of it.

In truth your damage could have been a lot worse and you could have lsot the leg so in a very crude sense you were lucky. Anyway good luck with a fast healing and keep it bandaged for a couple of weeks with daily change in dressing.

I consider it a blessing most of the other guys were older than I, and I've proven to be very durable over the years

as the guy that wore all the hats in our factory, I thought about sending them some pictures... as they likely needed to have a safety training meeting, since an incident report was filled out...
