In response to a "selling all my fish" topic on a local forum, I braved a trip to the traffic laden Johannesburg yesterday after having secured a package deal with the guy advertising.....

It was a 3 & a half hours drive to get to his place only to be told that this one & that one had already been sold (which formed part of my negotiated package deal)

I looked at what he had left & decided on 4 Albino Oscars and 3 Jack Dempseys, (the original package contained about 14 fish)...... It took him the best part of almost 3 hours just to catch the 4 Oscars, so I decided to leave the Dempseys...... He was chasing the fish with a net, & when they go behind a rock, he would remove the rock & chase the fish again until it goes behind another rock, then replacing the first rock..... He'd take out the 2nd rock and repeat the procedure.... (endlessly!!!)

Please make sure that when you secure a deal with someone... You keep the fish agreed upon, and remove every obstruction in the tank to make for easy catching by the time the person arrives.....

This was most frustrating, & I wasted a whole Saturday, just to get 4 Oscars.....

On an up note, hopefully these oscars will produce babies for you :D

Funnily enough i removed all "obstacles" except for plants around the outside of the tank to make it easier to catch my fish for customers. It got awkward once when i had some loaches which lived under the slate. As soon as they came in the open i tried to catch them and they darted back. Luckily i tried this before anybody had arrived.

how is it that the fish you want to catch knows it's the fish you want to catch?

why didnt you just tell him to get all the rocks out and get on with it as you had a long drive home??maybe he was nervous and wanted to do it "correctly" infront of you, i know when a member came to my house not too long ago there was no messing about i literally ripped the plants out of the tank, and left him to catch the other fish in another tank, its most rude of the guy to have left you hanging about like that... but then again 4 albinos, think id have been torn between being hacked off and dying to get those babies home lol
i hope you have success breeding them i really do, im very jelous i really am,but very pleased for you at the same time

shelagh xxxx

Sounds to me like he didn't want to tear apart his tank. The first rule of catching cichlids: Remove decorations so that the fish don't get hurt.

Of course you could always blindfold the fish first, then it wouldnt see the net coming

He needed to coral the fish to one end using a piece of perspex or similar then catch the fish from the pocket created.
BigC

This seems so obvious, & I never even thought about it..... Next time I'll take my own perspex devider with....
