Banning Betta Cups

I ask this question, however, where is the store going to house the bettas then? Is is feasible or cost effective to house bettas for sale in 1g containers, if we opt for the bare minimum? If that's not possible, does the store then integrate them in the other fish tanks? A betta in a tank full of nipping serpaes, boisterous danios, or hungry cichlids is no better than a betta in a tiny cup. If that doesn't work, what's next, a total ban the sell of bettas in that particular store? I'm not saying your petition is a poor idea, but have you thought of a solution for the store if indeed you are sucessful with your petition? I used to work at PetsMart and I was incharge of the bettas. I changed the out the water in the betta cups everyday and made sure that the cups were filled more to give them more space. I didn't work there long, but when I did, the bettas were in excellent health and building bubble nests. I'm not saying that they should be kept in cups permanently, but as a holding place while they are waiting to be sold, if kept clean and well-fed, it is a lot better than keeping them integrated with other fish, considering most of the fish sold in these types of stores are generally considered incompatible with bettas and the current was too strong in the display tanks. It is also more cost effective. 50+ 1g bowls or containers take up a lot of valuable space. Valuable space that can be used to display other items. Have you proposed a solution? I'm not trying to be negative, but you have to consider both sides of the arguement in order to make an effective petition for your particular cause. Knowing the legitimate concerns of the opposition only helps you in the long run and they will be more willing to work with you to come up with a suitable compromise. Perhaps it's just a matter of better maintenance on an employee's part.

I think it would be easier for the store to house bettas in breeder nets left to float in suitable tanks or something similar, because at least the water would be properly heated and there would be a flow of water going through the net? It's not a top notch betta-tastic solution but it's better than cups with no water changes!

yes, lets get betta's out of these pathetic little cups. If Stores want to sell Betta's then they need to make adequate provision for them. In my local LFS all male betta's are in a specially designed tank with seperators, with a reasonable amount of space each.

if it then costs a small bit more for a betta if the LFS has to increase price then so be it, but these shops need to realise and take some responsiblity rather than adopting such a lazy approach.

One LPS I go to sells them in cups but has a designed shelf for it so the males cant see each other. I think it is kinda cool:)

A few pet stores here have betta set ups like that, FBT, they give them a decent amoutn of room, and it looks so nice, they all look very very healthy too in the shelf set ups,

Hey, once you get like 50 signatures, ill print it out also and give it so my 2 lfs, the 3rd lfs, only keeps females, in a sorority, because they siad the tanks are way tro small, not faie for the fish; Yehh!!!!

When there are enough signatures, I will print mine out, and bring it to my Superstore LFS.

To be honest I'd rather the bettas be sold in cups than anything else. My LFS does not sell them in cups, they house 1 betta per tank. So you see them housed with goldfish, barbs, cichlids, angels, and gouramis; they just get beaten up so bad that they usually die from lack of medical treatment for their injurys. This also promotes bad fish keeping, makeing new fish keepers think that they can keep bettas with fish that would be less than friendly towards them. I do agree that the cups should be sizable enough for the fish to turn around in, and water should be changed out daily; but the betta cup is an idea that for the most part exists for a reason.
