I know the point of baffles when you are trying to do a fuge with sand bed and such. I plan on using them on my overhead pod fuge. The question I have is, do I need to bother with them in my sump tank, which will just have a skimmer, heater, and return pump?

Yes

The reason for this is to stop things like algae (if you are using an algae/mud sump) from being sucked into the return pump and stoppin git.
It is also to stop sand from getting into it etc. Also if you want to acclimatise fish in the sump before putting them into the main tank then a baffle is good. A return pump is extremly powerful and can eaily suck in a fish.. i know as i had one kill my beloved maroon clown when i was moving rockwork in the main system. :(

I wasnt planning on putting anythign in the sump other than the heater, possibly skimmer, and water. No sand nothing. All the sand and stuff and plants will go in the fuge up top.

A couple of baffels to stop bubbles getting sucked into the return pump would be useful.
