Bad Week

Hi all, not a good week for me so far, I bought 6 cardinals and 3 ram ciclids on sunday, i noticed 1 cardinal had a white fluffy eye on monday and 2 had damaged fins, so i done a 30% water change and started treating with melafix, today i lost 4 cardinals and 2 of my existing fish - a angel and a silver tipped tetra, i'm gutted i lost my female angel as i had a breeding pair . theres no damage on the dead angel or tetra all other fish look fine, water stats are - ammonia & nitrite 0, nitrate 10, ph 7.4 They are in my 180L tank. Does anyone have idea what could be wrong. oh, also my female angel that died was very skittish last week when doing tank maintenance.

Do any fish look pale or darker in colour.

Hi Wilder, all fish acting normal,swimming around relaxed - no darting, flicking or rubbing, only just noticed my silver tip tetras look a bit blotchy and one has red and white blotches on its body.

Are the blotches white in the centre with red on the outside, or red in the centre with white on the outside.It sounds bacterial to me.

Wounds that are white on the edges and red in the center are most typically Aeromonas. Those that are red on the edges and white in the center are generally Columnaris. Both are gram negative bacteria. The best treatment for this is any sulfa antibiotic with trimetheprim.

Red on the edges and white in the center. Theres only one with red and white blotches, the other 4 just look a little blotchy.

I'm treating with melafix, in stock i have pimafix and esha 2000 witch is a fungus, finrot and bacteria treatment. i just read the esha instruction and it describes that it works on redness of skin on the body.

Your fish have columnaris then.

Add the esha 2000. Just dilete the melafix down with a water change.

Ok, i done a 30% water change and added the esha2000, ive also added a pump and air stone. Fingers crossed and will let you now how it goes

no idea if these were first fish or additions to a setup, but you really consider getting a quarantine tank.. they prove to be very usefull at times like this-yes i know it`s a bit late now but bear it in mind for the future

Thanks Shelagh i wish i did quarantine them, i guess i got a little lapse in doing things as i never have trouble with the fish i buy from my lfs, this is a big lesson learnt.

all the cardinals where additions to my tank, all cardinals are now dead and another silver tip tetra has died

A bad strain of columnaris can soon knock a tank out in less than aday.

Any improvement with the fish that had the blotches.

wilder do you remeber when i bought that molly and it wiped out my tank with the same thing?

that was very fast too and boy did i regret not Q`ing, lesson learnt fast here
