Bad Driftwood?

Hey, all,

I have a 20g long tank with a huge chunk of driftwood in it. I have a HOB and an canister filter, but somehow I always have bits of stuff floating around in the water, sometimes worse than others. I also have a large population of snails. This doesn't make sense to me because I don't overfeed, AND I've got a population of assassin snails!

My husband used to have this tank with the same piece of driftwood, and I always accused him of overfeeding, which he steadfastly refused.

I'm half tempted to clear every single thing out of this tank, get new sand, lose that piece of driftwood and start all over again. Does anybody have any ideas what could be happening? The tank's been up and running more than a year.

To find out for sure if it's the drift wood, you could take it out and put it in a bucket of water and see if loads of debris come off it?
