Bacterial Bloom

Evening people....

Looking for some advise/help here got a bit of a bacterial bloom going on at the moment and looking to find out how best to get rid/treat this

A bit of history the tank is a fluval roma 240l, fishless cycle completed last october. Running a Fluval 305 & EX1200 with sand substate
My Tank has been fine up until about a week ago. Water always clear, then i added about 25 Sagittaria Subulata, 20 Vallis and 5 Amazon swords plants, a couple of days or so after they were added i noticed the water started to look a bit dusty/cloudy ?? is the only way to discribe it. 50% WC was carried out and did not look any better after and since the its getting a bit worse although i can still see the back of the tank...any ideas

Any ideas then ?? Thought cloudy water is a bacterial problem

I mentioned the plants as that was the only thing that had changed in the tank up to then

If I neglect to clean my substrate, which is rare, and then do a clean I usually get a weak bacterial bloom almost immediately and it only lasts for a couple of hours at most. That yours happened after a couple of days suggests it may not be that, but you did disturb the substrate a lot putting those plants in.

My thought is that it might be diatoms though because the sudden addition of plants will have disturbed the balance of nutrients in the tank and that often triggers diatoms.

What colour is the water/bloom? If it's milky white then it's probably a bacterial bloom.

Yeah I did disturb the substrate a heck of a lot (couldn't make my bloody mind up where to put the plants)

It's milky white.... Doing a 4 day black out at the moment, then a massive water change after..anything else I should be doing ??

I'm pretty meticulous when it come to tank maintenance

A few water changes should clear it up in a couple of days. Other things to check for would be that nothing is blocking the filter intake, no extra gunk in the filter and etc. Those things can cause a bit of cloudy water and its easy to overlook

If it's a bacteria bloom it's harmless and you don't have to do anything other than make sure your water is well aerated as the bacteria use up a lot of oxygen. They'll often cause a pH drop as well if you don't have sufficient buffering (KH).

I added new plants to my tank a few days ago, & my water went cloudy.
It cleared after a day or so.
Maybe in planting them I disturbed the substrate too much

Good point.

Even mulm/detritus trapped inbetween the leaves of the new plants could cause it.

Am gone to carry on with the black out for now then big water changes and check and clean up the filters if needed main thing is all the fish seem to be fine.
