I have 8 Sunset Platys and all of them have redish gills. Is this normal for sunset platys? is it part of their colouration?

I only ask because none of the other fish have red gills.

BTW, opinions on my tanks stock, 20 Gallon hex tank, 1x Bristlenose plec (female around 6inch), 3x Glass catfish, 1x Phantom tetra, 1x guppy, 8x Sunset Platy (2 are 3months old), 4x Amano Shrimps. and id like to get 1 or 2 assassin snails.

Your stocking seems quite compatible to me.
Please post a picture of your fish. A reddish tint is quite normal in some color variations but can be indicative of disease in other fish. It is hard to say without the pictures.

apparently only allowed 100k
Used 0bytes of your 100K global upload quota (Max. single file size: 100K)

i dont understand, its saying file to big and they are around the 800kb mark. Gonna be hard to get a decent picture if it has to be less than 100kb

If you have a photobucket account just upload the pic on there then paste the IMG code

Example: post it in your comment and it will appear like this

As Lyra said, the img code from photobucket can give an awesome result here. This is one of my photos using the simple IMG code. It is a harbor seal pup I spotted on the beach in Oregon a few years back.

you yanks have such a nice country, the wildlife is crap here... foxes are cool thats about it though.
have you looked at the pictures of my platys?

thats a nice fish, what is it?

My fish is a spotted african leaf fish :)

But some of your platys look pregnant.. well at least one to me does.. maybe thats how sunset platys are suppose to look.. Not an expert on platys was just responding to your question as to which fish it was in my picture. Although considering their color their gills looks like it would be normal blending into them. But like I said, I'm no expert.

oh yeah, they were definatly pregnant, and they have since given birth, and got pregnant again lol. the 2 3month olds i have i kept from the first week when i got the platys. thing with platys is if they are not pregnant they are giving birth and i got 5 females and 3 males.

like i said, it only the platys that have this redness. the area around the gills is fine and all their fins are fine, infact im quite proud of how well my fish and my tank are doing, just the colour i guess im relating to if it was on me, in which case it more than likely would feel sore, but i guess these are fish and they can have that colour as part of their natural colouration.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Well I'd wait for other people's opinions before actually deciding. Congrats on your platys being pregnant though!

AWESOME photo! My daughter spent a couple years in Oregon going to school for Marine Biology. Back in Minneapolis now and never stops talking about going back. She's also an accomplished photographer. Mind if I steal this to show to her?

Thanks :)

My female Amano shrip is pregnant too which i am extremely happy about, must mean my water is fairly good, just a shame i wont be able to raise them, (google Amano shrimp breeding) but i havent got the room or equipment too.

A little hard to steal from our forum Spouse, it is on my photobucket account. Feel free to send her a link to it if you wish.
