Hi. I bought 2 guppies today. All was fine until an hour ago when I noticed one fish just staying at the bottom of the tank. And now the other fish is laying beside it. Every now and again they dart around the tank but then go to the bottom again. I'm worried incase they are dying! I don't have any other fish in my tank. Tank is new and has been cycled for 2 weeks.

to the forum, your tank hasnt cycled please read the link in my signature it will explain the process to you, cycling takes alot longer than 2 weeks, however as your fish have only been in the tank a day ammonia shouldnt have built up enought to kill them, yet, so that leaves the question what other chemicals are ther in the tank? how did you acclimatise them to the water, did they appear to be healthy and swimming ok in the shop

Thanks for reply. When I got fish home, I let the bag float in tank for about 20mins and then added a cup of the water from tank into the bag and left for another 20mins. And then used a net to transfer fish into tank. I asked the guy in the shop about testing kits befor buying the fish. And he told me as it was a new tank I had nothing to worry about. As guppies are hard fish. And as long as the water had been cycled for a week.

When I set up my tank 2weeks ago I added water conditioner.

Fish were swimming fine in the shop.

a liquid based test kit is essential, especially for new tanks. the API master test kit is the most widely used, i strongly reccomend you invest in one, you cant cycle your tank without one :)

The acclimatization process was rushed.  You want to add much more than a single cup of water.  Read this link on how to properly acclimate your fish for the future.  They may bounce back, but the bigger issue is that your tank still isn't cycled. Read the links in my sig to learn about cycling.
