Agree with the others, barbs of may types can be tough for beginners in the case where they've not realized the nipping traits will be there. If you plan for them by having a large volume tank and having them in large groups (the usual beginner problem is they never planned on having the barb group use up such a large percentage of the maximum bioload of fish their water volume can support) then you can get into that "zone" of happiness that littlenemo describes. But with only a couple of barbs in a small tank with other fish you've got potential trouble on your hands I'm afraid.
