This is a cube tank so fish will need to be non-active swimmers, but there are lots of these. Are you thinking of moving any of the existing fish, or is this to be new fish?

The GH would be good to know. I am suspecting it will be on the soft side, given the pH but let's make sure. Many of the fish suited to the new tank will be somewhat more demanding with respect to their parameters.

You can probably bring water samples to your lfs for them to test, or you can search it up online.

If you are on municipal water, check the website of the water authority, or if not there, call them. Get the number and their unit of measure so we know what we are dealing with.

I previously asked if you intended moving fish so we would know any starting points, or if it is a fresh start (as it seems to be).

EDIT. I wrote this yesterday but I guess didn't post it, so here it is.

Male bettas (Siamese Fighting Fish) are not community fish.

We still need to know the GH.

The water appears to be very soft, the ppm (= mg/l) is given as zero. So soft water species are suited. The pH will most likely lower which is fine.

So, fish for the cube tank...some of the pencilfish, particularly Nannostomus eques which swims at an angle and spends its time cruising very slowly among branches and surface plants. Floating water sprite is ideal for this fish. Some of the other Nannostomus species cold work too, a few not. If you want lovely red, look at N. mortenthaleri, or the very similar but without so much red N. marginatus. These latter three are more mid-water than the first. Another rarely seen is N. espei. These are all peaceful, sometimes males within a species stage little tiffs but damage is never done.

"Nano" type fish are also an option. Hyphessobrycon amandae, or one of the Bororas species of dwarf rasbora. The "dwarf" cory species Corydoras pygmaeus, C. hastatus, or C. habrosus are good, in a group of 10-12 of just the selected species.

Because the tank is roughly 16 gallons, I would go with more neons. At least 10 should be fine. 6 kuhli loaches should also work out, but other members might want more.

You can also get some shrimp, but maybe wait for your tank to have perfect water with fish for at least 2 weeks before adding them. Don't make the same mistake as I did(adding them the first day).
