Hi

I've currently got a 180 litre FW tank and am looking at adding a fish and live rock only salt water tank that when i am able to time wise etc I could also put some softies into aswell.

I currently like the idea of the Aquareef 400 made by aquaone.

My question would be does anyone know if these are any good?
Is there any pitfalls etc with them?

As for Live stock I need to decide on a CUC, what CUC would people recommend for what I am looking to do?

Fish wise I love the yellow stripe maroon clownfish, Thread fin butterfly and flameback angel. Do people think these would work together in the above tank?

Thanks in advance.

I know its not a helpful reply at the moment as I dont know much about marines to be giving advice, someone will be around with an answer soon.

All I can say is that Aqua One tanks are generally really good, I have not heard a bad thing about their marine tanks (as someone selling them anyway).

Only few things I can note on stock are:

Butterfly.. consider when adding butterfly... they are serious coral munchers, will really limit you later on...

Maroon Clown... def one of the most aggressive clowns so do be carefull with stocking around them, though they are gorgeous.

Flameback angels are lovely little things, can be a little picky with polyps and the like so again, you will need to consider what you want coral wise later on.

As for CUC, I preferred the Red Leg hermits to the blue but thats just because i love their brighter colours. But I found Nassarius and Cerith snails to be the most valuable, especially the nassarius for turning the substrate over.

A mithrax crab might be useful, they are good for grazing on the unwanted greenery in the tank... as are Turbo snails...

Hi thanks for the help.

During research I found out the maroon was the most agressive clown but hoped that as it would be the 3 different fish and CUC in a 4.5ft by 2ft tank I'd be ok. Didn't think about the Threadfin and its love of coral munching, so thanks.
I like the sound of turbo snails will look into the others.

Do you or anyone know what softies if any would not have the butterfly etc munching it?

Trouble with the butterfly is that they are really unpredictable as to what they nip, I had a pair of Racoon Butterflys and in one reef tank they nipped nothing, in another (when moved to larger tank) they nipped the toadstools when they extended and zoas and xenia, most of the easy soft corals lol. They didnt touch the torch or hammerhead lps corals or the mushrooms though.

And if anything, I think the Racoons are less inclined to munch corals compared to the Auriga.

How about a few cardinals or damsels instead of butterfly? Or fire fish... or Royal Grammas and other basslets.

Or a wrasse! You can get some gorgeous wrasses that would make a lovely center piece.

Solar Wrass would be lovely!! Get to a nice 12-13cm.

So with an Auriga included i'd be better staying fish and live rock. I would have to include the Auriga as i like them and the wife loves them so i'm allowed to upgrade if we can include one. lol
