would they eat my plants and would they eat any algea that may crop up

Mine have been fine with all plants. And they do eat algae, but think of them like aquatic sheep. They just keep it grazed down (although hair algae they seem to actually eat the entire strand). So for example any algae on ornaments etc will be kept very short, but they wont completely remove it.
