I'm not really sure where to put this but hopefully this is a good place. I have been looking at pictures of apple snails and I think it would be really cool to get one! I was wondering if any of you knew where one could be bought and how much they usually go for? And what kind of fish can they be with?

Hi, I can only answer part of you question as I am in the UK. Here you can buy Apple Snails at lfs or by post (seen some on ebay). They are not expensive. As to what fish they can be with, IME loaches are a bad idea as they eat snails. I got 2 Yoyo Loaches to eat the pesky snails and they attacked the Apple Snail. I hadn't thought they would do that. I think Puffers also eat snails so maybe they wouldn't be a good idea either. I have a 11" Common Pleco, 10 Cardinal Tetras and 9 Mollies and about 20 fry in with my snail and they all leave it alone. Hope that helps. :) Oh, and make sure you get Bridgesli and not Canaliculata as the latter will eat your plants. Bridgesli will only eat plants if it has no other food. www.applesnail.net is very informative.

applesnails are very common and can be found at 99% of lfs's. Theyre also very cheap, usually $1. (dont know about the English currency though). As for tankmates absolutely no loaches or puffers. They eat all snails, wether they can eat them whole or constantly pick on them, your snail will end up dead. Also knife fish and all other snail eaters will eat/kill your snail. Lots of small fish will pester them like bettas and other aggressive/fin nippers. But for most fish species, applesnails get along with them quite well. Check aquarank.com for the applesnail forum, its real good. And I know advertising other forums is breaking the rules, but I believe if its a specialists forum its alright.

You've got me worried now! I have seen other members saying go and look on planet catfish and other sites so I thought it would be ok.
