I'm wanting to adding a pair/trio of Apistos to my tank, but I also have 40 Cardinals in my tank, relatively small, a few are 15-20mm.

Which really colourful Apistos would go well with them? Or should I say, not eat them..

Thanks for any suggestions.

hmmmm, can't think of any that would eat them to be honest.

I had a bad experience with them in a 2 foot tank. I found a Krib chewing on a neon, and 30 seconds later a male Apisto I had, got hold of another one.. :/

That's new info for me. Didn't think they would go for something that size. Which species?

A full sized krib, I can certainly imagine having a bite at a cardinal given half a chance.

An apisto, only if it gets a really good opportunity. I have cardinals in with my agassizi and he's a nutter.

Same here. I've kept a few species of apisto and they haven't attacked my shrimp let alone my neons. Though with that said I'd go for the following.

Aggassizi
Borellii
Trifasciata

Thanks for the advice!

My Apisto, I don't know the name of.. Was bright orange, with a purple bar running along the top of its body, with a red tail. That's all the info I can give :/

I have one, in a tank with a shoal of cardinals, right now. I am in fact looking at him. He generally ignores them. Shrimp, females, corydoras, he will kill, but he's fine with cardinals.

My A. baenschi Inka doesn't bat an eye at my very small, young gertrudae rainbows. And they are little piggy guys, so they go to the bottom of the tank to try and get drifting nibbles of things that the bottom feeders eat during dinner time. They are right in front of his face and he's still just sifting his substrate for food. He does love live brine shrimp, though. Hopefully your fish are larger than brine shrimp. ;)

My cacatuoides ignore my false neon tetras. They are smaller than cardinals, not much bigger than your juvie cardinals, and mine are fully grown.

I bought a pair of Apisto Borelli yesterday which are in with Cardinals and Glowlight Danios. Their mouths are far too small for Cardinals IMO at sale size but I guess when they get larger it could be a problem with small ones. Mine are pretty big and probably 18 months old so I can't see there ever being an issue. I was worried about my baby Bristlenoses however but again they're like 15mm at 10 days and the Borelli's mouths are tiny! The Cardinals will grow too so I guess you just have to judge for yourself. The thick lipped Apisto's definitely have bigger mouths and could be more of a problem!

Yeah I've noticed some have much bigger mouths.

I'd feel more comfortable with a pair of Hongsloi instead of a pair of Agassizi, haha. I'll wait and see what's available, by everyone's experiences here it looks like I'll be safe anyway.

Thanks for the help everyone :)
