Currently my 60l (see stock below) doesn't have a fish with 'wow' factor, however pretty the embers and betta may be. Therefore my question is, will my Female Betta be compatible with an Apisto (pair or single?)? If not, is there a striking centrepiece fish compatible? (basically a dwarf gourami without the disease or aggressiveness.)

Cheers very much, Jonty

not big enough for an apisto they need 25 UK gallons really it is big enough for a blue ram though mikrogeophagus ramirezi or a nanochromis transvestitus

Bettas are part of the gourami family, so I would personally advise not to place them with any other gourami or fish that has an aggressive tendency x

I wouldnt put a blue ram in that tank, they are a specialist fish that requirement quite specific condtitions such as:

PH between 5.5 - 6.5
Temp between 28 - 32 celcius
Nitrate - Never above 20ppm

The main prob with blue rams is the higher temp they require, most freshwater fish will not appreciate this higher temperature making blue rams a bad community fish.

majority are farm bred now and can easily be kept at 26c in community tanks i have kept mine for 2 years in my community tank at 26c with various other fish including apistogramma various tetras and L number plecs
it certainly used to be the case when people were keeping more wild cought fish but now most fish are tank bred they accept a much wider temp range

Because bettas are territorial fish, we do not want to mix them with territorial fish in a small tank - the worst it would do is encourage the fish to fight over it, the best would be heightened tension and stress. In a 60l tank, the betta IS the centrepiece. The tank is his domain.

Take care stocking your tank further, especially if you're a newer fish keeper. Overstocking can more easily lead to a decline in conditions down the road, which would affect the livestock in the long run. In a tank like this can potentially go several years with no losses, but many new fish keepers find them dropping off much sooner, I know they did for me when I didn't know what I was doing. Right now your tank sounds lovely, a big school of those little tetras must be stunning. Something I would add to the setup as it is right now is shrimp. a bunch of ghost or cherry shrimp, or a few Amano shrimp (but just one type) - this adds an interesting aspect your aquarium doesn't have yet but adds efficient scavengers that add minimal bio-load to the tank.

I had a betta setup for a number of years in a 15 gallon, which I believe is about 60l. It was live planted and the stocking was 8 cardinal tetras, 1 betta, 6 Corydoras stein., a few Amano shrimp, and trumpet snails. It was an interesting mix of creatures without any overstocking. I'm just starting a similar one now, but this time with 150 litres and apistogramma (or maybe Rams or Keyholes, I haven't decided) instead of a betta. And now that you mention it I think a huge school of embers might be pretty cool.

i've seen someone hold a blue ram with a betta, but i don't know if its advisable. if you go with any dwarf cichlid, i'd imagine a pair would be a bad idea. my understanding is that cichlids will become more confident and therefore more aggressive with companions.

I love Rams and have been wondering if they have any hardier varieties for a community set up?

bolivian rams; they require 2ft 80L tank minimum though. temperature range of 24-27C, soft slightly acidic water, low nitrates also preferred. but theyre considerably more suited to community tanks than blue rams.

You could try a smaller Apistogtamma species.

Apistogramma Hongsloi are one of the smaller Apistogramma species and are a nice fish.
