Apistogramma Agassizii Is This Normal

Sounds like pairing behavior. Anyone dealing with cichlids should always have a divider handy, pairing behavior can get a bit nasty at times, requiring a time out. Some caves and other decorations for hiding will help, as well as provide a spawning area should this occur.

The tetras are an excellent idea, not only as dithers but as a natural barometer of the safety of their environment. Neons or cardinals work well for dwarf cichlid species.

ok ill try some tetras its calmed down now though

Finally you take advice on dithers. But I thought that you didn't want neons because they are "hard" to take care of. And cardinals are mostly wild caught and need a very low ph.

no its jsut i dont want the neons to give them a desice coz the once at my lfs quite often get deseases i think im going to get glowlight,x-ray tetras or maby some cherry barbs

I would go against the barbs as they get agressive in smaller numbers. And I don't htink your tank could handle much more agression. I would go with the tetras as they are more peaceful.

cherry barbs arnt agressive at all i have 3 in my 30g tank and there not agressive at all

In smaller numbers, yes, barbs are agressive. Your tank size does not permit 8 barbs. It is like Mbuna, you overstock to spread out agression.

cherry barbs are one if not the least agressive barbs i have had them for about 7 months and they have not niped anythink
and im not having a argument im just saying there not agressive

I know what you are saying. Get the barbs if you want, but a bigger tank, and not to mention more of them, would be GREAT! :good:

Cherry Barbs would be fine (about 5-6 IMO), although they tend not to shoal. Cherry Barbs aren't aggressive like other Barbs.

Both are nearly all wild caught. When shipped and acclimated properly they are not as touchy as you might think. The problem is that they are so unbelievably cheap to acquire in quantity that many shops consider them nearly disposable. This is why they are rarely seen as locally bred fish.

as a rule, ive always been taught that cardinals were more sensitive than neons anyway, is that true?

as for dithers for apistogrammas, i found that in my tank that lemon tetras do the job as they're pretty quick when they want to be and dont seem to fazed by the female displaying to them

in my mates tank, his male cockatoo always displays at the bentosi tetras and they often interact back, ive seen the male apisto and the male bento chase each other in circles

i think there is definately a good case for dithers then!

ill have a look for lemon tetras then
i know my grammar is terrible ive got dyslexia

I was going to reply and suggest something a bit slower like hatchets or rummy noses as dither fish so they're less likely to predate on any fry that survive. But I wasn't sure where this thread was going so I won't!
