Hi Guys

Could you please check my post in the thread below http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/341005-my-first-tank/page__view__findpost__p__2871008

and advise on the clearly visible bacl spot on the apistogramma viejita male. It did not have such a mark when i got it about a week ago. There is an initial video of it in the thread post as well.

Appreciate any advice/suggestion. Hope it's just a colouration and nothing wrong with it

Thanks

I will read the whole thread later.
For now I will ask some questions.

How big is the black spot?
Do you have any snails in the tank?
Any signs of flicking and rubbing, excess mucas, darting.
Does the fish look skinny or bloated.
is the spine bending.
Where is the spot on the fish.

Black spots, and patches, bad water quality, digging wounds, fighting wounds, ammonia burns that are healing, cancer, fish tb, parasites, dead skin.

Thanks for the reply wilder.

The spot seems to be quite big but looks to be internal and can only be seen when in the light, as if something is inside it's stomach
- yes, 3 or 4 snails in the tank (Do u think it has eaten one and still digesting it?)
- no signs of flicking, rubbing, no excess mucas and no darting. It's more busy in wooing the female and dancing in front of it
- no spine bending as far as i can see
- looks normal size
- no spot on the outside, but appears like a big black botch under the light, seems there is something inside it.

Please check the last photo on this link as to what i mean http://picasaweb.google.com/neo.praveen83/Fish?feat=directlink

Thanks

Black spots can be caused by snails.

Black nodules can be digenetic fluke.
Black to red nodules beneath the skin. Metacercariae (digenetic flukes)

get you some info on black spots and black patches.

I would remove the snails from the tank.
Click on black spot and black patches.

Thanks for the links wilder. However, i'm still not able to relate to either of them , probably me being a newbie, not able to identify properly. Did you get a chance to look at the picture btw? If not could u take a look and would u be kind enough to identify from the picture? I can take a close up picture, if the one i posted i not clear.

Thanks

Can you enlarge the pic please, as my eyes are not the best now that i'm getting older.

No worries :). Hope the image below is good enough although a bit pixelated :(

Can you isolate the fish and use an internal bacteria med.
Also what to see if the blackness clears up being taken out of the main tank with the snails.

Are the scales lifting.

Is there any swelling beneath the blackness.

oops, i have only one tank :(. At the moment, all the fish scales and body parts, fins look fine and it seems to happily elongate the fins near the female.

Is there any swelling beneath the blackness.

No swelling as far as i can see. I'll check again when i get home in a couple of hours. Hope it's not swelling and it's only some indigestion

Thanks

Apistos do have the ability to shift/change thier colours quite dramatically. My Bolivian Rams go from pure silver to very black marked across the body (similar to your photo) in seconds.

Are you sure that this is not just natural behvaviour?

Thats the thing though ZoddyZod, the blackness seems to be beneath the skin rather than on it, although i'm a newbie in all kinds of fish. So i dont know if this is normal in apistos.

Thanks

I'm not sure, I've never looked that closely. I'm just comparing the pic above to what I have seen with the Rams and it looks very similar. Also the fish has started to show this after a week of being introduced, could be possibly that its now comfortable in its new surroundings and starting to colour properly?

hmmmm, I'll take a look tonight and see if it's under the scales or not.

actually, here's a picture of one of them. This one can be pure silver across the body, all the black markings seen can come and go.

I'm no expert but it dosn't look like markings in the pic.
I would check tonight if there also swelling underneath with the blackness.

Maybe also do a thread in tropical discussion with the pic. To see if it is markings.

Thanks zoddyzod.
Your pic does look like markings. But the posters dosn't to me.
