ammonia levels need to be at 0 not 0.25..... at 0.25 your fish will still be poisoned. as said earlier you need to do a huge water change to get the levels down to 0. then retest after half an hour to let the new and old water get a chance to mix properly and getting a more accurate result. if its at 0 then retest in the morning and im affraid do the whole lot again until the ammonia reads 0. as you are in a fish in cycle you will have to keep doing large water changes every day to keep the fish from being poisoned. throw the test strips away, they are rubbish and very inaccurate and test 2x a day with the api test kit.

just woken up and tested the water, its at 0.25. i'll do a huge water change now, and wait a bit until i test it again. the girlfriend even tested our tap water last night to see what that level was, came back as 0, tap water with the added dechlorinator was 0.25

yes do a 75% water change and retest in half an hour, its best to change a bit too much than not enough to ensure that the water is safer for the fish
some people do get small traces of ammonia in tap water but if it read 0 then went up to 0.25 when you added the dechlor that doesnt really make sense are you sure about these test results? what brand of dechlor do you use?

ive never used that brand but im sure it wouldnt contain ammonia... which is what would be needed to give the test results you gave.....
maybe it was a freak result!
i would recommend changing dechlor to seachem prime, it might be slightly more expensive but it will out last most other dechlors as its more concentrated. since i swapped im not making anywhere near as much trips to the lfs for dechlor

How long does a bottle last date wise?

I currently use TapSafe, but am wondering whether to change to this, I see a 50ml bottle will last for a long long long time.

When they say a certain amount per L, is that per L changed or a capful of that amount for your tank size with each bucket?

i use 10 liter buckets to do my water changes at the minute and i have a 1ml syringe to add the prime. for 10ml you need 0.25ml of prime but i always add about 0.5ml ish. ive not bought any dechlor for about 2 months and i am currently changing water on 5 tanks i used to use aquasafe and needed about a bottle every 5 weeks or so as you need 10ml per 10 litre bucket if i remember right
