I am using API FW master to test for Nitrites, when I add the indicator it turn purple on the bottom. when i shake it it starts out purple color then turns light blue over 5 min.
if i test my main water it starts and stays light blue.

would the indicator turning purple immediately mean that there still is nitrite even though after 5 min the color would be close to 0ppm?

the nitite test usually says leave for 5 mins while the colour shows so if the end colour reads as if it was 0 then i'd say tht wot the result is mine turns blue straight away after a shake but i guess all kits differ i wouldnt worry 2 much but just keep monitoring just incase :)

You might be experiencing very high nitrites - there have been reports that dark purple initial and then transitioning to something people often describe and almost a very light green-blue is really sky-high nitrites. zero nitrites should stay blue from beginning aqua-pooling straight through to sky-light-blue at the end of the 5 min.

i dont think its very high. i have been testing every 24 hrs. and the end result has gotten progressively lighter each day. so i think i am getting to the end of cycling. its the immediate purple without shaking that bothers me. my assumption is any purple any time indicates nitrite. other tanks i have tested start light blue and stay that way - no purple at all. so thats what i am waiting for.

Yes, there is the mention by RDD himself of "weird dark green-blue" in the initial sinking reagent for the API nitrite test when nitrite is spiking to very high levels.

And then there was another recent thread where someone reported light green and we all discussed it at length and ultimately it did turn out to be very high levels and the person had to transition down through a bunch of darker purples to light purple and finally to sky blue -after- that light green had been happening.

That's the only reason I'm bringing it up for you. I guess you'll just have to be the judge. If you are fishless cycling, a large water change should bring the nitrites down to a more measurable level if they are indeed high.
