Was considering it for Jai but don't want to do anything that will cause problems

I've used one but only on bare bottomed tank, the only problem with the one I have is that is doesn't have a thermostat so you have to keep an eye on the temp, OK in a constant temp environment but no good in extreme weather or sudden drop or escalation in temperature.

Wow thats good to hear, i'm having a hell of a time getting heaters for my spawning tanks i liked the hydor mini heaters that do 2 - 5 gal but their a pig to get hold of in the shops. Sorted.

They do the Hydor mini's on Ebay OR in my LFS, so if you need me to grab you some, let me know x

i will keep that in mind, i am going to one of my lfs's tomorrow to see if they have any more in stock (i brought the last of theirs before lol)

Thank you

personally i'd be worried about the fire hazard of leaving a heating mat plugged in all the time, not to mention the possibility of exposure to water...

heaters with thermostats are far better. another problem is there isn't really anyway of regulating the tank temperature. if it gets to hot, you have to unplug the mat, but then the temperature could drop quickly, and then you have to plug it back in, unless you aren't there to see how low the temp's gone. All that fluctuation, the fish would be better off without a heater at all, i would think. Better than coming home to fish stew.

When a heat mat is used for a Viverium (spelling?) its on all the time and alot of them also have water in them. But i do agree with heat variations though my small heat mats don't have any controlling and they hold a constant heat

What size and wattage are your heat mats? and also what size is the aquarium they heat? and finally what temp will it get to lol

they are not really the heat mats its the hydor heaters i mentioned before, though they are a mat hmm. Any how they heat a 3gal tank to about 79 - 80 which my babies seem to love. As i said before i dont heat my little males as the room is warm any way

Yeah the hydor mini's heat my 3.3g to 78-81 at the moment, depending on weather, I think I will get a 25w for these bigger tanks mind you, be more stable. Bettas like humid conditions don't they? I've read up to 86 is ok for them?
