I have a spare 5 gallon tank thats just taking up space since i bought my 55 gallon tank. What do you think i should do with it?

1) Betta with some African Dwarf Frogs.

2) 3 Dwarf Puffers - cute little things!

3) Make it sandy and have a few cories.

4) Leave it as a quarantine or hospital tank.

Betta with frogs is a really good idea. Either that or the puffer sounds good. But i thought 2 would be the very max you could put in a 5 gallon. Alot of people had told me one.

I'd go with betta and ADF's. I don't know how big dwarf puffers are but 3 seems like quite a few for a tidgy tank. And I'd not go with cories, they are cute but if they are the only fish in the tank you will not see them that much/ they will be at the bottom most of the time. Although you could maybe get away with a betta and some cories. Don't kill me if I'm wrong.

Sorry, but absolutely NO WAY should you attempt to keep three dwarf puffers in a 5 gallon tank.

These fish are highly territorial and need at least five gallons each.

If you put three in there you will have only one left within a week.

Also does the tank have filtration? Puffers are very messy but require spotless and mature water, without filtration they will not last long.

Also, cories are far too big and active to keep in 5 gallons, especially as they must be kept in groups of three minimum. There are a couple of dwarf species, but they're quite hard to find.

A Betta is your only option in such a small tank.

you can keep like 10 pepperidge farmed goldfish in there:lol:

I've actually found them VERY difficult to keep! Within two days of acclimation they've developed some sort of fungus. Also, they taste better than they swim.

Anyway, I would go with a betta. May not have the look of a fully stocked aquarium, but there's not alot of stocking options for 5 gallons.

hmmm....

Someone suggested these to me, so I suggested them here. Glad to know I just decided to keep it as a hospital tank.

I defer to those more knowledgeable. :)

Well i got a beta and 2 african dwarf frogs. Do you think i could get an oto or 2 in there when the tank matures? Or maybe some kuhli loaches? or anything else?

edit: my tank has an external bio wheel filter. Its one of those 5 gallon hex tanks they sell at wal-mart. I also followed instructions i read on many websites saying i should put a stocking over the filter intake so the frogs don't get their arms stuck and suffocate.

 good choices!

Personally I think bettas enjoy having some friends around.

My daughter has an eclispe 6 with a betta, 2 african dwarf frogs and some neons. They seem quite happy and live together just fine. There's a piece of wood with an anuba growing on it and plenty of little caves underneath for the frogs. The neons enjoy swimming in and around the wood bridge.

The beta swims where ever he pleases. :p

Some probably think this is overstocked, but the water parameters are steady. maybe the plant helps.
