Ok, so I noticed my boy Rebel (the one in my avatar!) hasn't been as active as he usually is the last few days. He's acting lethargic, just sitting at the bottom of the tank. Also, his fins appear clamped, not full like they usually are, and he's not eating. The only visible sign of anything is a little fleck in between his eyes, there's a little white piece, like skin peeling. It's not white or stringy, like fungas, and it's very small. I could only get a decent look at it with a magnifying glass.

We checked his water last night, and everything was fine.

He has been in a tank without a light, so maybe he's depressed? I'm putting him in a new tank shortly (with a light) so maybe this will help? I was going to do it anyway, cause I hate him not having a light. But I hope it will help.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you!

whats the temp of his water, cooler water cam make them lethargic and is he getting any temp fluctuations, u can help clamped fins by keeping water extra clean (water changes everyday) adding a little aquarium salt and makin sure his temperature is stable

His water is at 78. His tank was just cleaned, today. :) I do it weekly, as he is in a 5 with a sponge filter. He is starting to swim around more. I'm going to up his temp to 80 and keep an eye on him. I will add the aquarium salt as well, I didn't think of that! I may do more frequent water changes this week like you suggested, and see if that helps as well. :)

Thank you for your reply!

I am sad to report that I woke up yesterday morning to find Rebel pineconed. He died several hours later.

I tried to help him, unfortunately, I was too late.

I will miss you Rebel!

sorry to hear that

sorry about your fish I am having a really run of betta deaths in the last few weeks. I am doing all I can but my original boys were all bought about the same time.

That's been me the last week. In addition to Rebel, last Friday I lost a female, Lemon, to sudden dropsy, and an un-named HM just died. At least with the HM I was able to get a new fish cause I just had him 5 days. Still made me mad cause he was a green and white marble.

Losing Rebel hit me especially hard. He was my baby, and I was going to try and spawn him again. I spawned him once but he ate the eggs. :/ Argh!

Well I'm hoping now my fish death streak is over. Everyone else is healthy and active-knock on wood!
